My ninth one to be exact and I was the least nervous that I have been my entire career. Usually the first day brings a terrible stomach ache, shaky nerves, and lots of prayers. But today, I was pumped up! It may be because I love my school and the families that go there. I've been there 4 years and it truly feels like a second home. Speaking of, I made a few changes to the room that I wanted to share. <br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimOYD7pimtN8qLisgm4KNbo6b9-CUC0XOp50kje1l_8iteypX1d2AMyb6SXKIl11cfYQZG2ueiAeczp5blJmhsBwHfwnYH02PO_-wII0p6rF1wLRbhSV5zTNyzZQ2FkIqkIqjO6amM1g/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimOYD7pimtN8qLisgm4KNbo6b9-CUC0XOp50kje1l_8iteypX1d2AMyb6SXKIl11cfYQZG2ueiAeczp5blJmhsBwHfwnYH02PO_-wII0p6rF1wLRbhSV5zTNyzZQ2FkIqkIqjO6amM1g/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We'll start with my back to school bulletin board. Pinterest inspired of course, but I added my own touches to it. Like the coconuts with the kids names on them. I spent hours going through a HUGE bag of letters to find all the little pieces to their names. I could have done something much easier, but I'm crazy like that. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a picture of what I had on the student's desks for meet your teacher. Notice how I do not hand write the names on their name tags. My handwriting is decent...I just don't like it, and when I do write it I critique it all.year.long! I also include their number on their name tags. It makes life easier for me and them. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I made some cute labels to help keep things organized and so the kids and parents would know where to put school supplies. It's so much easier when they help sort through some of it. <br />

<br /></div>
Here are just a few little snippets of my new and improved room. It gets better and brighter every year. I'm super excited about my Daily Five focus board. Usually I make huge poster anchor charts that are hard to keep up all year. This way the expectations and criteria for success are in front of them every day...right in front of their book boxes actually!<br />
<br />
I also added some trees that my sweet friend Holly gave me. One girl's trash, another girl's treasure! <br />
<br />
Once again, I have no theme in my classroom other than bright and beautiful. The more color the better! It makes life so happy.<br />
<br />
So there it is, ready for a new group of sweet little first graders to learn and grow. <br />

All of you Reading 3D givers, I know you feel the frustration of not having official 3D scores to report on report cards. Yes, we have been progress monitoring; but that does little to tell parents where their kids are right now and where they need to be. We have about 6 weeks left until EOY benchmarks...eeek! Is your class ready? Mine are close, but all of us aren't there yet. So....I made this sheet to go along with my students report cards. Thought I would share in case any of you feel like me and give as much information as I can to the parents of my students.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5P-3mB91RqmcFNOa1ZPWUh0eGM/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank"><img alt="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5P-3mB91RqmcFNOa1ZPWUh0eGM/edit?usp=sharing" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzPX7i1i5KFP9F9quZT-ovnc4TDfb4S3TruJqsJcznVCDvM_XhhMknJj9dEvvq046bTf-W22AkROdmrMHVTGvMl6hLtb97IQnaSh04C96Fp-VYoZfwgv9gebU0U9waE_LT8ipS-ULI3Q/s1600/Report+Cards.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta; font-size: large;">Click on the picture to get this for free!</span></div>
<br />
I also use colored pencils to color a circle around their score so parents know how great their child is doing or if they are close or really behind the goal. I'm visual, so colors help! I use lots of colors in data and assessment charts!<br />
<br />
Let me know if this was useful for you!Meghan Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16627252581248639649noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-49260432037653181.post-90011809593913233772014-03-26T18:39:00.001-07:002014-04-01T18:54:12.166-07:00Geography with technology!I just finished up a great little unit on <strong><span style="color: cyan;">Geography</span></strong> and I wanted to share some of my favorite activities that helped my students learn geography concepts!<br />
<br />
Obviously we read this book. It's like a no brainer when it comes to getting little ones to think about how they can locate themselves on a map.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPcb0SzqoMkExBnxnRshYDmaG5zXxkdn416MeXisZmQMw7Zr8xhT1HegIRX-btudtumXoTvCIaZgleuxSUU_xlF-aptlMZlyX-yn88Qa6eMpV6NRLxsUr0Mv5URI72D9ZPN2HBT4ZBOw/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPcb0SzqoMkExBnxnRshYDmaG5zXxkdn416MeXisZmQMw7Zr8xhT1HegIRX-btudtumXoTvCIaZgleuxSUU_xlF-aptlMZlyX-yn88Qa6eMpV6NRLxsUr0Mv5URI72D9ZPN2HBT4ZBOw/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And then we did this little project. We started with my planet, my continent, my country, my state, my town, and last my house. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaKmw9MZF__JH3KiwE4iOEz21Sx8Pgk5m1s3EU0AFWsnJx3onZXPwBDf9jhdco9_bvjJmtz6b3EuCtuqmRoso8a4ww6mYiLoyS3jlEz6Uh2adsV-KbdJnetyazqqpuIFozFWzK1Vc-Dg/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaKmw9MZF__JH3KiwE4iOEz21Sx8Pgk5m1s3EU0AFWsnJx3onZXPwBDf9jhdco9_bvjJmtz6b3EuCtuqmRoso8a4ww6mYiLoyS3jlEz6Uh2adsV-KbdJnetyazqqpuIFozFWzK1Vc-Dg/s1600/Slide2.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
But this year I added a little something extra....technology!!! Using google earth we looked at real satellite pictures as we made our paper circle maps: planet, continent, country, state, town, school. Check out how awesome this is!<br />

<br />
<br />
We talked about landforms and what they look like on a map too! First we watched an amazing brainpopjr video, then we made our own landforms out of Playdoh. We labeled our landform and took a museum walk of the landforms that we created. There is also a great idea floating around on pinterest of doing this same idea with sand and a table cloth, but I wasn't feeling that brave. Maybe next year. <span style="font-size: xx-small;">(or maybe not!!!)</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2WAAfVsdiZojlA6ZiiPZx_T_VYwpbo5MU_yGi8bCxpWEt8E-s7UVr0zjzbp7mbBlSH7hHwMPbqlmKyOkryQUC_pyeHknrfrdB1re07aj5muCegKGgAc6zdR5BP03ksgTB7U8p6oVDdA/s1600/Slide9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2WAAfVsdiZojlA6ZiiPZx_T_VYwpbo5MU_yGi8bCxpWEt8E-s7UVr0zjzbp7mbBlSH7hHwMPbqlmKyOkryQUC_pyeHknrfrdB1re07aj5muCegKGgAc6zdR5BP03ksgTB7U8p6oVDdA/s1600/Slide9.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We related what we knew about landforms and found them on our big classroom map of the country. Then we found and labeled our own on these fabulous maps. My coworker came up with this idea. Isn't she fabulous?<br />

You can't talk about maps without the compass. We learned how to label a compass, and then we labeled our classroom. To reinforce the compass we played a fun game called four directions. It's just like the game four corners, except the person who is it has to call out a direction. The kids standing at that wall have to sit down. They LOVED it. We play it a lot. It's also a great brain break activity!!<br />
<br />
After we learned all about geography, we hit another essential standard by looking at culture on different continents. We explored what they eat, animals that live there, how they dress, what school is like, what language they speak, and much much more. Our students are learning about culture in Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America! <br />

Personalized labels!!! I have given this as a gift the past two years as well as made them for myself and I use them all. the. time! I just gave them to my friends yesterday and they were so excited. It was inexpensive, fun to make, useful, and thoughtful. I cut mine up, put it in a clear bag from the party section at Walmart and stuck a ribbon on it. Bam, perfection...my sweet first grade teaching buddies LOVED them. </div>

<div style="text-align: right; width: 480px;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Before we begin studying different holiday traditions around the world, I always like to start with sharing our holiday traditions here in America with the students in my class. First we read "Night Tree." It's a story about a family who every year on Christmas Eve go out into the woods and find the same wild evergreen tree out in a big clearing. They decorate it with edible ornaments, spread out a big blanket and drink hot chocolate while singing Christmas carols. That way all creatures can enjoy a special treat for Christmas. It's so sweet, I just melt every time I read it. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-bn-cache="%7B%22values%22%3A%5B%22Hero%20Product%22%2C%22ProductImageMain%22%5D%2C%22isPageAware%22%3Atrue%2C%22nodes%22%3A%5B%5D%7D" data-bntrack="ProductImageMain" hidefocus="true" href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/night-tree-eve-bunting/1100460968?ean=9780152574253" id="yui_3_8_1_1_1386242283221_361"><img alt="Night Tree" class="product-image image img book" data-expand-image="1" height="338" id="rnd-289110489" itemprop="image" src="http://img2.imagesbn.com/p/9780152574253_p0_v1_s260x420.JPG" width="260" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After the book, we have a class discussion about holiday traditions. We turn and talk to a neighbor about one of our traditions and then I send <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5P-3mB91RqmM0FXZ0E0VFJfZ2s/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">this sheet</a> home in their BEE book. Parents sit with their child and help them brainstorm all the traditions that their family does for the holidays.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5P-3mB91RqmM0FXZ0E0VFJfZ2s/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank"><img alt="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5P-3mB91RqmM0FXZ0E0VFJfZ2s/edit?usp=sharing" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoPa76PN4iQwSbbXTD8y2SJkCzZ4t1Zl0WIKcf9Dl37LHYR9N3m0K0cALsMhZPzviyIb2UyZtuW_fVpzT_ROUdF0VHGGvjKbEz79tAjr3KMJtTnd9e3eDVIaBCe4OvycCY1PgswfFmwQ/s320/family+holiday+traditions.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The next day or following week, we use our graphic organizer to help us write a narrative about our family holiday traditions. As we share them, we can compare and contrast our traditions with others in our class. Then we are ready to explore the traditions of other countries and cultures around the world the following week. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I always love to hear the sweet traditions each kid does with their family. </div>
</div>

I love decorating my classroom with student work, but worksheets just aren't fun to display. As we learn about breaking a number apart and finding all the different ways to make a number we each choose one way and make a craft to display our learning. Here are a few of our combination creations:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIEzCED6UT7j69yGTxjbMQFgl-DNPQQGXt4aXxAp351d9L1kCtxCschVjp61rN0zEjTZQfGsqr92ILDNQveCaq9FwOPH3wTUJbhzCTGhAZACiyeKm6066USQ0Us17HpAQdSv2TAVm93g/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIEzCED6UT7j69yGTxjbMQFgl-DNPQQGXt4aXxAp351d9L1kCtxCschVjp61rN0zEjTZQfGsqr92ILDNQveCaq9FwOPH3wTUJbhzCTGhAZACiyeKm6066USQ0Us17HpAQdSv2TAVm93g/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A fun book to read with this one is "Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf." Students created combinations of 6 with red and yellow leaves. 3+3=6 5+1=6</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEyxaiV8qz4Kszho1O-afgH11iYyLrSaKxjPdkGQ7RJgcx8k8nQeUIaaVY7ZOLuKRKKGYRqrnhJaJ3Rj5tg90qoANvEjjyT9M3x8b1MNhEaC6bgZ-etZeBD-f86KkMiEOiWvU4P0zjqA/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEyxaiV8qz4Kszho1O-afgH11iYyLrSaKxjPdkGQ7RJgcx8k8nQeUIaaVY7ZOLuKRKKGYRqrnhJaJ3Rj5tg90qoANvEjjyT9M3x8b1MNhEaC6bgZ-etZeBD-f86KkMiEOiWvU4P0zjqA/s320/Slide3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I think this one is from What the Teacher Wants. You could read "Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar" as a read a loud to go with this activity. Students made combinations of 5 with cookies inside and outside of the jar. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Who doesn't love spiders in October? We made combinations of 8 using the spiders legs. The body is an 8 from our die cut machine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjElDt4I2Zkw7HIDtqVNBfiNKVjJA-QuTfygf3Vnvvq2YFh9Pv4PdnfgT82urtkYMUqalvl9NZlMF8yBSno82IvHCVa8KRT3bVcXuGeRWNqytv4ft8gdWdMUZpqTOFfci0_i-qLbS9SUg/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjElDt4I2Zkw7HIDtqVNBfiNKVjJA-QuTfygf3Vnvvq2YFh9Pv4PdnfgT82urtkYMUqalvl9NZlMF8yBSno82IvHCVa8KRT3bVcXuGeRWNqytv4ft8gdWdMUZpqTOFfci0_i-qLbS9SUg/s320/Slide4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We made combinations of 9 using peas and carrots on a plate. Our magic spoon could only scoop out 9 things. After this activity, I learned that peas can be square...ha ha! Integrate a health lesson with this about vegetables and allow students to sample peas and carrots. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP6CvAahDLxuHX1NQV3JnL6mGgfHdvO6S9KMxBEvHowr_4wiH6xZ2eE5lloDtHp7Sw1R6TAD4P2M2ZcYXLdzhpX-6_OhD5pZ0bvtsFZy7QuuKy-p4bEdYiSRYrEOFyHASiuReVfW2RCA/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP6CvAahDLxuHX1NQV3JnL6mGgfHdvO6S9KMxBEvHowr_4wiH6xZ2eE5lloDtHp7Sw1R6TAD4P2M2ZcYXLdzhpX-6_OhD5pZ0bvtsFZy7QuuKy-p4bEdYiSRYrEOFyHASiuReVfW2RCA/s320/Slide5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a glimpse of how happy it makes my room. I have all of their combinations displayed all over and students refer to them as we continue our unit. It is one of my favorite math lessons. I don't own this book but I was able to find it online. If you can't access you tube at your school (like me) then you can find it on gaggle tube. Just type it in the search engine. </div>

After we listened to the story, each student chose a triangle that I had cut out in all different shapes and sizes. We brainstormed where we see triangles in the world around us and each student shared what they were going to turn their triangle into. This was a very important step. My rule was that you had to make something different from everyone else. In previous years I haven't done this and everyone made the same thing...you guessed it, the roof of a house. I love what some of them came up with all on their own! </div>

<div style="text-align: right; width: 480px;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just taught the most amazing economics/apple lesson! Our school is working with the ASAP farm to school program. We live in a rural community with farm land everywhere. The goal is to get kids thinking about local produce and what type of goods their community provides. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found the lesson plan for the apple market <a href="http://growing-minds.org/tag/winter+lesson-plan/" target="_blank">here</a>, and turned it into the best most hands on economics lesson that I have ever taught. Talk about making a lesson applicable to real life and hands on. This is how I used it:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First is my best selling product. This is the easiest and funnest way to teach little minds about the Constitution. Read my post about it <a href="http://firstgradewithacherryontop.blogspot.com/2012/09/constitution-day.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Love, love, love this little mini unit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/NeighborhoodsThen-to-Now-A-history-unit-about-the-past-to-the-present-469678" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMKouvZIFks-crPHRmHa2Bs_h6xnfGrzp8S4n3cgVxMMml94UXMqdXiP0z-xLslu_c9UGafH1XZZKt2J-Plb26R9vlWuTB_Ash00p3eH7T6D1xOslE2CrplUhjBQsvayLyTMMC3ckXlQ/s320/neighborhoods...then+to+now.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next is my Unit on how neighborhoods and communities have changed. It includes fun ideas on how to create a Pioneer Day from long ago in your classroom. My students LOVED this last year!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sneezy-the-Snowman-Writing-Craftivity-481073" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwwmCRfip-hYhJmc0-WenlDglK3pceDBbhbK64i1lSZNf69ZTtA3IoyxDrxTg9dtYXC2WZx3U19XeH9rT9Q_mcxYv4oO_xsZvpV81bs5TC2g5y9iqLqEm3aVTo0u_bdYtNpsHVlUkuYw/s320/Sneezy+the+Snowman.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Who doesn't love snowmen? This adorable writing activity has everything you need to create this. Seriously...all you do is press print. It would also be a great sub emergency lesson to have on hands. I got amazing stories and my students were thrilled to create their own melted snowman.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Skippy-the-Skip-Counting-Caterpillar-769583" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfxDL7HSitaGZB1Z8jD9SnTL5k04EC48eakux_iJykSrN540TsxV22S_LZfpL4qqGlugw1iTR4tsmhpAOKSmRpBSyJkmEj-zuIJ6lPn8tZhLWYts2vC0G4__SQ9ubIT9_sO4cLMTSOlQ/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This resource includes an amazing and adorable craft to help your students skip count. It also has math tub ideas and practice/assessment sheets. My students refer to skippy all year!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And I have lots more for FREE in my store. And if you like what you see, follow my store for lots more activities coming soon. {Last year I worked on getting my national board certification so it really slowed my tpt products down}.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div align="left">
It's back to school time!!! Teachers in our county start back on Monday. Of course I'm going through the normal roller coaster of emotions that all of us go through at this time each year...excited, sad, excited, nervous, excited, overwhelmed...</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
I've been working on a few things that I want to share with you. </div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
The first is a back to school gift that I am using with my kids this year. I bought a big pack of suckers for cheap and made these <u>SWEET</u> labels. </div>
<div align="left">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next is a sign that I made for my classroom bathroom. I think I said this a thousand times last year so maybe a poster in the bathroom will help them remember. Here's hoping...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I also wrote a post last year about more meet the teacher and back to school ideas. Click <a href="http://www.firstgradewithacherryontop.blogspot.com/search/label/meet%20the%20teacher" target="_blank">here</a> to read about it. </div>

Here's where I teach calendar. Letterland users...if you look at the far right you will see how I organize my Letterland character cards for live reading and spelling. It makes teaching this so much more efficient. I highly recommend making one. All it's missing is the Letterland header. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's my math wall and how I am organizing my math tubs this year. Did you notice how all of my tubs are mismatched? I worried about it for a split sec before Nickers (my husband) put a stop to my spending. Oh well, maybe next year. I did print off new <a href="http://adayinbcasfirstgrade.blogspot.com/2013/07/getting-ready-for-new-year.html" target="_blank">labels</a> though. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I also changed my alphabet this year. Instead of having a separate word wall that my students NEVER used...I combined my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Manuscript-Alphabet-Mini-Posters-Word-Wall-Headers-With-A-Chevron-Flair-295146" target="_blank">alphabet chart</a> {which they use a ton} along with my word wall. Now everything is at the front of the room. I'm so excited about this change! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr6eALXd9MtI6Atj2DXOZN7UTxkkBY17b5HF9zJZ3ZfFqvpdmNIy59TBIbH5Dcb6yCs9XbWYtik7w2VyAnVypCckI-eNMUV3fJhJp6StH7sykdrK023c_MmF5Qxq3aISImgDVo53ENnQ/s1600/IMG_1119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr6eALXd9MtI6Atj2DXOZN7UTxkkBY17b5HF9zJZ3ZfFqvpdmNIy59TBIbH5Dcb6yCs9XbWYtik7w2VyAnVypCckI-eNMUV3fJhJp6StH7sykdrK023c_MmF5Qxq3aISImgDVo53ENnQ/s320/IMG_1119.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

And I love those <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/HAND-SIGNALS-A-Classroom-Management-Resource-151316" target="_blank">hand signal cues</a>! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the reading area. Needs a rug or something. And maybe oooonnnneeee more book shelf. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The rest is a work in progress. I don't think I'll ever be done tweaking and perfecting this room. I'm sure you all feel the same way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

Let's start off with a fun fact...<br />
<br />
I used to be a cheerleader for Appalachian State University. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXyePKiY_CDXkyMgjSTBOh_9bd5K62SphDndzRz2t54C5jrTpfd4FOupJ1IIvgaTB_nd3g9-QOR7qp1hQODV8aT0EwTVEZUepA-Cj9lVGEqxicXAvzM7nVqMI4dztvHT3M8ZXxoSdFxw/s1600/tamales.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXyePKiY_CDXkyMgjSTBOh_9bd5K62SphDndzRz2t54C5jrTpfd4FOupJ1IIvgaTB_nd3g9-QOR7qp1hQODV8aT0EwTVEZUepA-Cj9lVGEqxicXAvzM7nVqMI4dztvHT3M8ZXxoSdFxw/s320/tamales.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(I'm the third one from the left) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are my cheering besties...we called ourselves the hot tamales because it was our fav candy. You know in college when you eat real healthy. We LIVED off of hot tamale candy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD9ONrcoHB7NfcY9LKj6kfX0HA1q0lds1HY0-iCra3OHzg85nZhVGhGgjzSFNioDN4CCSMJwGYauPYFMM1RmGEqZhGdZ7jahSjVbTfwoyR3tdOrCZg268NiCQNSpQGREx2-DK3hInHsQ/s1600/beach+tamale.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD9ONrcoHB7NfcY9LKj6kfX0HA1q0lds1HY0-iCra3OHzg85nZhVGhGgjzSFNioDN4CCSMJwGYauPYFMM1RmGEqZhGdZ7jahSjVbTfwoyR3tdOrCZg268NiCQNSpQGREx2-DK3hInHsQ/s320/beach+tamale.jpg" width="205" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One year the football team made it to a Southern Conference...in Charleston. We loved to do stunts everywhere! I had to dig deep for this one...funny how I couldn't find one of us at an actual game. I'm the flyer on the very top...the one who doesn't have good form on her arms...(you fellow cheerleaders know you were thinking that!) ha ha</div>
<br />
Ok, now for a real introduction....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP5b7NSacZ3CQxjBryjjGIWlI9M-KbeG_4hKI5xs7Jz1WgRcXF0JfQDN84M8LqfEMzn2LFowMt1pxEyMBqyz0Ygq9hSTAUrn5lLREvWUx3pUBoFTV6srTRLR4dexWxsIJh9zYs-4e01A/s1600/IMG_2556.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP5b7NSacZ3CQxjBryjjGIWlI9M-KbeG_4hKI5xs7Jz1WgRcXF0JfQDN84M8LqfEMzn2LFowMt1pxEyMBqyz0Ygq9hSTAUrn5lLREvWUx3pUBoFTV6srTRLR4dexWxsIJh9zYs-4e01A/s320/IMG_2556.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is me with the sweetest little baby boy on the planet. He is the center of my world!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh37Pf0BapXFJaAP_L2x7HM2eNwRKphvY87JCkVFHl1leH8EH0dx3GrB7Hh2orNE0mQVNPum6qtEZqjlhVi2tCynpeabFTaSaFeGWDOPcd_wF9shhJnjl_NnGxy9dN2XTrCe2RAhbvwTA/s1600/IMG_2569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh37Pf0BapXFJaAP_L2x7HM2eNwRKphvY87JCkVFHl1leH8EH0dx3GrB7Hh2orNE0mQVNPum6qtEZqjlhVi2tCynpeabFTaSaFeGWDOPcd_wF9shhJnjl_NnGxy9dN2XTrCe2RAhbvwTA/s320/IMG_2569.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And these two boys are the loves of my life! {Captain Hook and Peter Pan...minus their hats!}</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Which brings me to this guy. We met in college, fell in love and have been married for 7 years. So thankful for how supportive he is. Love him to pieces.</div>

This year I was awarded with the incredible honor of being named Teacher of the Year not only for my school but for my county! It was a true shock and a surreal moment. I've never been so humbled, and speechless! It's pretty hard to make a speech when your heart is beating out of your chest! So excited for the next level and so very happy to have friends like you to help me through it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have had 7 years of teaching experience. 1 year in 2nd, 3 years in 3rd, and 3 years in 1st and looking forward to many many more years of teaching! </div>

Here is one more fun fact about me...Hi, my name is Meghan and I am a Disney junkie! I LOVE Disney World. In fact, I have been so many times, I can't even count. It's kind of our family's thing. We used to go several times a year when I was a kid but now that I'm a responsible adult, we only make it there once or twice a year...at Christmas and Halloween! Check back with me in October and I will post pictures of us in costume...I'll even back date and show you what we've been the past two years! We always stay at the campground, Fort Wilderness. Just love it! Baby boy's first trip was when he was 5 months old! {I was a blond back then!}</div>

<div align="left">
Do you want to know the easiest way in the world to determine classroom helpers and jobs? It's called <u><strong><span style="color: #cc0000;">helper of the day</span></strong></u>. That's right, one student for the whole day is the line leader and my helper for any and everything that I need during the day. {For example: passing out papers, running to the office, taking a book back to a teacher that I borrowed it from, grabbing something we forgot off the playground...etc}</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
I used to have classroom jobs that were cute and changed each week. It worked great for a while but then students kept forgetting their job, or would fight over a job...someone would do someone elses...they would be absent, etc. It just didn't work for me. So I made my life really really easy and started using this fool proof system.</div>
<div align="left">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikY-pPTCuK2sbL5IV5HdyDKgANybu8QVA3pjJ_Lj-XzwKgc_Kwd09IHrYBaGOo2KkODLCs81Icx02oLNTXYunCBirJF8KeLv9iwxQQhl_pMvm-WY2DszetEvXXadhILxVvUpOcAyi3zw/s1600/classroom+helper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikY-pPTCuK2sbL5IV5HdyDKgANybu8QVA3pjJ_Lj-XzwKgc_Kwd09IHrYBaGOo2KkODLCs81Icx02oLNTXYunCBirJF8KeLv9iwxQQhl_pMvm-WY2DszetEvXXadhILxVvUpOcAyi3zw/s320/classroom+helper.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
I make a big chart that hangs by my door with everyone's name on it and use a clothespin to mark who the helper of the day is. I start at the top and move down the list each day. I can't tell you how much I love this method. And the best part is it is <span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><strong><u>EASY!</u></strong></span></div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
Hope this helps those of you like me who can't keep 10 classroom jobs straight each week, or who doesn't have time/find time to keep up with it.</div>

If you have a better or similar idea I'd love to hear about it. </div>

Well today I met with my first grade team...the first time all summer...and we talked for FOREVER. (yay!) One of the many things we discussed is our new schedule for the year (it always changes doesn't it?) and I shared this little unit outline for science and SS this year. They agreed so I'm ready to share it with you. <br />

The red is the Unit to correlate with our standards in science and social studies and the blue are the holidays because those are also in our curriculum and lets be honest...we gotta stick in those fun learning crafts and activities that are so much fun to do with holidays somewhere. I'm still working on making all of my science and social studies activities available for you but here are the ones that I use to teach for Constitution Day and History. Click <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Constitution-Day-Packet-287104" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/NeighborhoodsThen-to-Now-A-history-unit-about-the-past-to-the-present-469678" target="_blank">here</a> to check them out! I'm not one of those teachers that makes it easy on herself and uses the same one every year. I wish that I could do that and be satisfied, but I love creating them too much! I've been thinking about it for a while now and I finally have my idea. After my new blog design I'm a little inspired with ice cream so my bulletin board is going to be:<br />
<br />
"Here's the <span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Scoop</strong></span> on Mrs. Farmer's <span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Sweet</strong></span> First Graders!"<br />
<br />
After a little searching online I found this amazing one and will use it for inspiration when creating mine. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://missloviecreations.blogspot.com/2012/08/ice-cream-bulletin-board-and-ruffle.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" closure_uid_943211973="3" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwnv9VusGaFewZJhO04rWRw8D_cq9gJeU-H60ADW9XO3lo1_hYX4EhzX6Hf-4v-ZBNhaMtmby28Hga7Z_VvNMwnKJjZDlO6kHTQ48G80lorNtIROKRdAAQ7EZ9IVcvPy0DO7qJ8gkw9Zc/s640/Ice+Cream+Bulletin+Board3.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I love the awning and how she did the words "scoop" and "sweet"! She also has a great template for the ice cream cones...all for free! Just click on the picture to go to her website. <br />
<br />
I plan on doing something a little more with the ice cream cones. My title will be "Here's the Scoop..." so each day the kids will add a new scoop to their ice cream cone with information about themselves. Some ideas I'm kicking around are...family members, hobbies, pets, favorite subject, something they did on summer break, and color in their favorite ice cream flavor. Since the first day of school is on a Monday, I will probably have one for each day of the week. And I'm pretty sure that the last one will be their favorite flavor, topped to look something like this:<br />
<br />
<img alt="Summer Ice Cream Crafts for Kids" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2891" height="277" src="http://blog.mpmschoolsupplies.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/11/files/2011/06/Ice-Cream-8a-1024x659.jpg" title="Ice-Cream-8a" width="430" /><br />
The chocolate syrup is actually brown tempera paint in a condiment squeeze bottle. Love the cotton balls and sprinkles...oh wait, and the <span style="font-size: large;"><strong>cherry</strong></span> on top!!! <br />
<br />
As their gift for meet the teacher, I found a few things that I just love:<br />
<a data-ved="0CAUQjRw" href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=nsH55iHh8JG3VM&tbnid=ZJhO5y6w10zSgM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fediblecrafts.craftgossip.com%2Fice-cream-cone-smores-pops%2F2011%2F07%2F18%2F&ei=21LcUfauJ7O-4AO384F4&bvm=bv.48705608,d.dmg&psig=AFQjCNEQYVFhlkJeWGL8rIuH0ZOyqSyn_A&ust=1373480017347711" id="irc_mil" style="border: 0px currentColor;"><img height="196" id="irc_mi" src="http://cdn-ediblecrafts.craftgossip.com/files/2011/07/icecreamsmorespops.jpg" style="margin-top: 29px;" width="200" /></a> <a data-ved="0CAUQjRw" href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=yQTCXuom5gUGeM&tbnid=uPs9MpSzzW7dFM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dollaritemdirect.com%2Fbubblesicecreamconeshape.aspx&ei=uVPcUYK3ILHI4AOsr4HQAw&bvm=bv.48705608,d.dmg&psig=AFQjCNGQ3G_EXx7CeefQvYu_bUA9QN4s4w&ust=1373480175897201" id="irc_mil" style="border: 0px currentColor;"><img height="200" id="irc_mi" src="http://www.dollaritemdirect.com/images/products/detail/G18106.jpg" style="margin-top: 51px;" width="200" /></a><br />
S'mores treats and ice cream bubbles...maybe with a tag that says, This year will be so sweet! I'll share when I make them. Of course this will go along with magic confetti!<br />
<br />
If you are interested in an ice cream back to school bulletin, I thought of some other good titles:<br />
"Here's the scoop...1st grade is a real treat"<br />
"Ms. _____'s first graders are sweet!"<br />
"1st grade is scoops of fun"<br />
"Scooping up a great year"<br />
"Here's the scoop...we're a great class"<br />
<br />
And here are the bulletin boards that I have done over the past few years...this of course was before I was a blogger so unfortunately I was not good about taking pictures back then.<br />
<br />
2010: "Here We Grow Again" I put pictures of the kids faces inside of flowers!<br />
2011: "Let's Set Sail for 1st Grade"...Mrs. Jump inspired pirate ship...it was so cute! I had little pirate bears on a huge pirate ship.<br />
2012: "Let's Kick Off to a Great Year"...football inspired {since this was last year, I did have a picture}. Read more about this one <a href="http://www.firstgradewithacherryontop.blogspot.com/search/label/bulletin%20boards" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

I think I'm in love! It's so bright and colorful and every time I look at it, it makes me so happy. Tessa from <a href="http://talesfromablogdesigner.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Tales of a Blog Designer</a> was amazing to work with. I had no idea how hard this process can be. She has so much patience and just overall rocks. <br />
<br />
Be sure to click on the "About Me" link at the top. I just filled it in with lots of pictures and facts about me. Let's get to know each other! I'm also working on a Facebook page too! So many exciting new changes and adventures. <br />
<br />
It's normally about this time during the summer when I start thinking about how I am going to organize my year. With common core I definitely want to use more integration than I did last year so I think that I am going to start with my science and social studies units. From there I will plan on how I can integrate literature, writing, art, technology, music... along with it. So to help me out I made this little graphic organizer to jot my ideas down. It's yours if you want it. Just click on the pictures to download. Happy 4th of July weekend friends!! <br />

pssst... If you are an NC 1st grade teacher and want to know what I come up with, I'll post when I get it figured out. Wish me luck! And I don't know about you but I love to do home projects while I have all this extra time. Throughout the year our house gets a little neglected as the list of to do's gets longer and longer. As I have been working on my house I wanted to share with you what my husband and I have done using an overhead projector, and give you some ideas about what you can do with an overhead projector.<br />
<br />
It is no mystery that I am not an artist. I can barely draw a straight line and I definitely cannot cut one. Sad, just sad. But with the use of my overhead projector, I was able to create this mural for my baby boy's nursery.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYYHu_ZQ9vIY0nT2EKD2cPAQKXRfGJ2GEAfGZVI_ZwNxbl2qw9JynL4jC_62Csz5KB8GZUwMXJ2uoz2AlLgwzfUcFktyL0f716wTsLFJYh7JfcV44mxUTduJzQ1WBFvn8OpDjRVyUbRg/s1600/Nursery+016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYYHu_ZQ9vIY0nT2EKD2cPAQKXRfGJ2GEAfGZVI_ZwNxbl2qw9JynL4jC_62Csz5KB8GZUwMXJ2uoz2AlLgwzfUcFktyL0f716wTsLFJYh7JfcV44mxUTduJzQ1WBFvn8OpDjRVyUbRg/s1600/Nursery+016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> </a><br />

<br />
<br />
And this for our living room. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYBjsbxgZuuidJwF4zn4tvpKXgmHAzmt3nvui5C_iJCPatwNezxiQCeITxMrkj1QW2IafU3GT1HrNJGN5v2ALPs5tBYOGtov8M2EjOKglMeHXxwlbVGVlJhBW1TuS1uc6jPt3OPDbO-Q/s1600/IMG_0883.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYBjsbxgZuuidJwF4zn4tvpKXgmHAzmt3nvui5C_iJCPatwNezxiQCeITxMrkj1QW2IafU3GT1HrNJGN5v2ALPs5tBYOGtov8M2EjOKglMeHXxwlbVGVlJhBW1TuS1uc6jPt3OPDbO-Q/s320/IMG_0883.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">forgive me for the horrible quality of this picture!</span></div>
<br />
No decals, all freehand paint. <br />
<br />
For the Nemo nursery I bought a coloring book and made transparencies from pages that I liked. Then we used the overhead to project it on the wall and trace the outline. Next we headed to Michaels and bought some small acrylic paints in the colors that we needed and created our mural.<br />
<br />
I did the same thing for the tree. Except I found the tree online. Easy, inexpensive and fun.<br />
<br />
I researched some ways to use an overhead in your classroom too. First of all you could paint a fun mural in your classroom if your school will let you. But here are some other fun ideas:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/124200902194581723/" target="_blank"><img class="pinImage" src="http://media-cache-ak1.pinimg.com/736x/0b/73/50/0b73503b5cbf44667008fcb9c756f10f.jpg" style="height: 320px; margin: 0px auto; padding: 40px 0px; width: 240px;" /><img height="169" id="irc_mi" src="http://bookboxdaily.scholastic.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/01/Who_Will_See_Their_Shadows_This_Year.jpeg" style="margin-top: 42px;" width="200" /></a><br />
Use this fun idea with the book, Who Will See their Shadows this Year?<br />

A great way for students to practice drawing their shapes. <br />

How do you use your overhead? I would love more great ideas. Also, have you painted anything using an overhead? Send me a link if you have!</div>

I teach at a very fun school. We are constantly thinking on fun ways to act silly and bond with our students. During the last few week before summer break the teachers of my school choose a day to perform our annual variety show. Each grade level comes up with an act/performance. This year my team decided to spice things up a bit and do a synchronized swimming act. <br />
<br />
Oh wait, the last week of school? Report cards are due, field day, award ceremonies, crazy kids....how did you find time to practice? <span style="font-size: xx-small;">(you might be thinking)</span> Well...that was the tricky part. My dear friend Allison came over to my house on a Sunday afternoon while little man was napping and we choreographed the dance on my front porch in front of a window so we could see our reflection. We were shocked that no cars honked at us...<span style="font-size: xx-small;">they probably wanted to! </span><span style="font-size: small;">Then we had 2 days to teach it to our team...4 teachers and 4 teacher assistants. And this was no easy routine either. They were amazing sports, <strike><span style="font-size: x-small;">even though I was at times a drill sergeant </span></strike> and I leave you with.....</span><br />
<br />
The Mills River Swim Team <span style="font-size: x-small;">(Our act name) </span><br />

I'm still trying to figure out uploading videos so if you missed our school's teacher End of Grade Test motivational video, <a href="http://www.firstgradewithacherryontop.blogspot.com/2013/05/motivating-our-studentswith-little.html" target="_blank">click here</a>.<br />

Keep your eye out, I'm getting a blog face lift very very soon. It's in the works right now, and I couldn't be more excited!Meghan Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16627252581248639649noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-49260432037653181.post-5603711942936024672013-05-23T17:36:00.000-07:002013-06-01T13:30:38.898-07:00Motivating Our Students...{with a little teacher music video}!<div style="text-align: right; width: 480px;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's right...its a teacher music video...made by yours truly and performed by all the amazing teachers at my school.This year I was lucky enough to be in charge of a pep rally to motivate our test taking students. The idea behind it was we wanted K-2 students to be a part of the major testing that was getting ready to occur at our school. So I had the idea of making a motivational video to play right before the pep rally. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With a little help from my hubby writing the lyrics to Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA", I grabbed the school video camera and stalked all the teachers at my school during their planning. I am so blessed to work in a school with such fun people, because everyone was on board! With this project, I finally learned how to use Windows Movie Maker and recorded the song through a program called Audacity. It took about 2 weeks of diligent work, and it was so worth it! The kids loved seeing their teachers on video acting silly, and it was so great seeing all of us work together for our students. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think I am going to start this as an annual tradition at our school.Will I make improvements to next year's video? You Bet! Like for one, I won't use my voice...I love to dance, but singing is not my strong suit. I took one for the team this year, but next year when I write another song, I'm getting someone else to sing it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let me know what you think and if you have suggestions for me for next year.</div>

My dear bloggy friends out there in blogland. Oh how I have neglected you. I have lots of fun things to share with you but first I will start with my exciting news....</div>

The look of pure shock at my principal when I found out!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Still in disbelief with absolutely NO speech prepared!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the ceremony, my principal and I headed back to school, only to find that the entire school had lined the halls with posters and were all cheering. It was surreal, unbelievable and of course made me swell with tears. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. It was truly a moment I will remember forever! I'm so blessed with so many amazing people in my life...friends, family, coworkers, and all you amazing blogging teachers who inspire me on a daily basis. Feeling beyond blessed!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But let's get back to business. I finally submitted my national board portfolio this month...signed, sealed, delivered (online)...I'M DONE! I also got the test out of the way too. It feel so good to finally be free from spending all of my free time working on it. I'm so excited to be a blogger again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, without making this the longest post in the world I want to share something real quick. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are some inspirational candy tags that I made for our 3-5th graders who are taking their End of Grade tests this week. We had a special pep rally for them and each K-2 student wrote a letter to a 3-5 student encouraging them to do well on their test. Along with it we passed out blow pops and these tags: </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I highly recommend having a pep rally with your school to get kids excited and motivated about taking the test. Ours was awesome. I also made a music video with all of the staff at my school. It is a song that I rewrote to "Party in the USA"...except I call it "EOG Test Day". If I can figure out how to upload it, I will post soon!</div>

Read on and your classroom can look like this:<br />
<br />

There is no safe way to hang child work and fun decorations from the ceiling of your classroom...according to your local fire marshall. Each year we try, each year we are busted. So sadly year to year I have restrained from this fun and happy classroom look. That is until this weekend. I recently bought Reagan's <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Acrostic-Rainbow-Name-bow" target="_blank">Rainbow Namebow</a> and was determined to hang these adorable acrostic poems. So I headed to Walmart and bought fishing wire and command hooks, and called in the hubs for help. <br />

</a>I have 21 students so I decided to make three lines going the length of my classroom. I put each command hook as close to the ceiling as possible and I tied a loop in one end and hooked it, stretched the wire across the room and pulled the wire to my desired tension. Be careful not to make it too loose because the wire will droop when you add student work...I only used a slight droop in mine. Then I made another loop and put it on the other hook and voila, it was ready. Super easy and super affordable! Now I can add student work all throughout the year to make my classroom cute, bright, and cheerful...without worrying about breaking the rules for fire safety codes. <br />

The last blog post I wrote was (gasp) a month ago!! I am getting so close to finishing my national boards and since I depleted our savings to do it, I really NEED to get this on the first go round. But, in the meantime, I love to do little things to release all of that creativity that is bursting to come out. So, I took yesterday off from national boards and made some Valentines!<br />

<br />
Here is what I came up with for my little handsome. He loves his cars, trucks, and tractors, so I wanted to make personal valentines from him for all of his little friends at daycare. {Did I mention that he is not even 2 yet?...we all know that this is more for mommies fun, and I'm so happy to do it!} Click <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/I-Wheelie-Like-You-Valentines-Card-Template" target="_blank">here</a> or on the picture to get it for free. You could use it for the little boys in your classroom, or for your own sweet baby to use for their valentines!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
And this is what I made for my students. I got the idea <a href="http://theteacherwife.blogspot.com/search?q=valentines+day" target="_blank">here</a>. The best part about these valentines are you can buy a pack of 15 glow sticks for $1.00! I got mine at Michaels. So wonderful for us teachers on a budget. <br />
<br />
Thanks for letting me share some fun. Now it's back to national board work. <br />
<br />
Happy Valentine's Day!Meghan Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16627252581248639649noreply@blogger.com33tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-49260432037653181.post-55584839074255199692013-01-05T21:27:00.001-08:002013-01-05T21:27:49.918-08:00Sneezy the Snowman Writing Craftivity!!<div style="text-align: right; width: 480px;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
This week is all about snowman books, crafts and activities. I'll be testing students all week long...Reading 3D style {is it the middle of the year already??} so I wanted something fun for the kids to do at the end of each day this week. One idea I came up with while sipping tea and looking at pintrest this morning is the idea of the melted snowman. The melted snowman cookies I've been seeing look delicious and so stinkin cute. So, thinking about snowman books, I paired Sneezy the Snowman with this little craft and writing activity.<br />

<span style="color: black;">Here is what I'm really looking forward to in 2013!</span></div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
<strong><span style="color: magenta;"><span style="font-size: large;">Become a national board certified teacher!</span> </span></strong></div>
<div align="left">
<span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">That's right, I'm going through the process right now. I'm hoping to pass it on my first try so I'm working really hard. Wish me luck!!</span> </span></div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><strong>Become pregnant with our second child!</strong></span></div>
<div align="left">
I want my little handsome to have a sibling to play with that is close to his age. Also a reason I want to be nationally certified...daycare is so expensive.</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
<span style="color: magenta; font-size: large;"><strong>Potty train little man!</strong></span></div>
<div align="left">
That's a goal for this summer after he turns 2 in May. </div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><strong>Create amazing science and social studies units!</strong></span></div>
<div align="left">
I already have two uploaded on tpt and two in the works. I want great lessons that I can use again next year, and I want to stop putting these two subjects on the back burner. They are important!</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
<span style="color: magenta; font-size: large;"><strong>Start a play group!</strong></span></div>
<div align="left">
This one is mainly for the summer. I already have fabulous ideas and I want my little handsome to have lots of friends to play with.</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
Ok, I have lots more but I guess these are the biggest and most exciting ones. </div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
So school starts back on Wednesday {boo!}. Here is how I'm planning on celebrating New Years with my students.</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
I plan on reading these two books throughout the day. One during our comprehension read-a-loud and the other during social studies:</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
<img height="163" id="il_fi" src="http://www.readwithchildren.com/images/whistle%20for%20willie.jpg" style="padding-bottom: 8px; padding-right: 8px; padding-top: 8px;" width="200" />This is a great story about practice and persistence to reach your goals.</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
<img alt="" class="rg_hi uh_hi" data-height="246" data-width="205" height="200" id="rg_hi" src="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSf1-RhG0gMhx-AHf5e8Gafo7BGaiIxYpPj8oFeyEzvJZXHAdJd" style="height: 246px; width: 205px;" width="166" /> This is a great book that explains what a resolution is and how to make one. </div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
Then we will fill out this graphic organizer as a class to get those creative juices flowing.</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRqncA7Ytp7vN-V2h6pbURPYXm83XhO1VSSgc7xHfiuhQFx8eAKhTrscg9XwqBlLM6CrylpHsXsNERzGlUiP2Owgyb4khlcT69j78pNa6wH9r5DgJJr_iRlt4g_i2XeF_0NBmkm6vGYg/s1600/IMG_0327.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRqncA7Ytp7vN-V2h6pbURPYXm83XhO1VSSgc7xHfiuhQFx8eAKhTrscg9XwqBlLM6CrylpHsXsNERzGlUiP2Owgyb4khlcT69j78pNa6wH9r5DgJJr_iRlt4g_i2XeF_0NBmkm6vGYg/s320/IMG_0327.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next we will fill out our own graphic organizer to attach to our craftivity (below).</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
